My parents have this weird method of parenting: whenever one of us (my older sister and I) shapes up, it seems as though they put pressure on the other one. For example, if we both have a bathroom to clean and one of us does it first, the one who does it second will be under pressure to clean it because “your brother already cleaned it” or “your sister already cleaned it.”

The same thing applies to how we’ve progressed in life. My sister goes to college, graduates, buys a car, moves out of the house (well, she hasn’t completely graduated yet, and it’s not her car yet, and she moved back after that term, but still), and then they put pressure on me to do the same. It just seems really unfair.

Additionally, that whole view on life seems a little one-track. I mean, it’s like the board game, LIFE. You start by going to college/getting a job, then you get married, buy a house, have kids, and eventually retire and wind up in a nursing home (or whatever the other option at the end of the game is). I mean, who wants all of that? I’m sure that it was the ideal lifestyle in the past, and I bet there are some people who still want that kind of life, but why should I have to conform to this cookie-cutter lifestyle that my parents grew up thinking of as the ideal life?

I mean, what if I don’t want to go to college? What if I don’t want a “job,” but rather, a sort of hobby that I make money off of? What if I never get married? What if I get married to a guy instead of a girl (going off of the game, here)? Or what if I’m comfortable calling an apartment my home and never buy that house? What if I never retire to a nursing home? What if I spend the rest of my days traveling the world?

The lifestyle shown in the game of LIFE may be for some people, but that doesn’t mean that I want the same thing…

DC Comics has announced a new ongoing series that will take a look at future versions of their iconic heroes with Justice League: 3000.

Keith Giffen, JM DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire are behind Justice League: 3000 which will is presumed to feature future renditions of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash set 1000 years in the future.

No other details are known, but the following character designs were released by artist Howard Porter (via CBR).

For most of America, Psy is a funny name, a funny face, and a funny personality. He doesn’t sing in English and most people just don’t get it leaving most of them to not take him seriously. It’s easy to strip the significance behind “Gangnam Style” down if you don’t know what it means and solely find entertainment in the Asian guy shaking his hips. But what most people don’t realize is that Psy doesn’t take himself seriously. He’s a satirist and political dissident. “Gangnam Style” was a commentary, not just a fun pop tune with a silly dance.

Gangnam is Seoul’s wealthiest and flashiest neighborhood. For South Koreans, Gangnam represents the ideal life of excess and consumerism. Psy’s character in the video is a wannabe Gangnamite. He dreams he’s living the flashy, excessive lifestyle while he’s really just like everyone else, swimming in a public pool and riding the subway. But never in the video does it seem that Psy’s character is unhappy. He’s content to play in a children’s playground and meet the girl of his dreams in the subway. “Gangnam Style” is much more that we have made it, but that’s not surprising considering Psy’s background and how little we know about it.

In America, it seems like “Gangnam Style” was Psy’s big break when in fact the song had been released on his sixth studio album and his music career hadn’t been about making flashy and catchy songs. He believes music is the key to overcoming the intolerance embedded in his country’s political systems. Throughout his career, his songs have been banned for inappropriate content and have been surrounded by controversy, not to mention the fact that he fought his mandatory military draft.

Psy is a voice for his people. He’s fighting the oppression and intolerance he sees in his culture through his music. And by ignoring his worth and his value, we’re reducing the culture of South Korea into a short man with funny pants doing a ridiculous dance.
